SPIRIT BOOK CLUB: BRAIDING SWEETGRASS
WITH KAELA MAY
Over here at Root Mamma we’ve set an intention to read more books in 2018 that connect us deeper, open our hearts wider, and challenge our thought patterns. We want to expand into ourselves and collectively as a community! To add some support and gentle guidance with this we’ve decided to host a spiritual book club! Our intention is to meet twice on each book.
The first meeting you will come and have read about half of the book so we can come together and discuss important topics, thoughts, feelings, and what arises within us while reading. We feel there is nothing better than sharing a good read with other like minded souls in community!
Our first book is Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer; who is botanist and professor of plant ecology who shares a collection of stories on indigenous wisdom, scientific knowledge and the teaching of plants. As a Potawatomi woman, she learned from elders, family, and history that the Potawatomi, as well as a majority of other cultures indigenous to this land, consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers. In Braiding Sweetgrass, Kimmerer brings these two lenses of knowing together to reveal what it means to see humans as "the younger brothers of creation". As she explores these themes, she circles toward a central argument: The awakening of a wider ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgement and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the world. Once we begin to listen for the languages of other beings, we can begin to understand the innumerable life-giving gifts the world provides us and learn to offer our thanks, our care, and our own gifts in return. Personally, this book has deeply shifted how my soul interacts with the world and am grateful for the opportunity to share this incredible read in community.
We encourage you to read up to half the book by the first meeting on January 25th from 730-930pm, but if you’re feeling called to join us and have just begun the book we still welcome you to join as everything discussed will stem from an intuitive flow. Also, if you’ve already read Braiding Sweetgrass we encourage you to come as well. We are planning on having a short time towards the beginning of class be an open reading time where we can read some passages individually but as a tribe to help guide our discussion and sharing. The second and final meeting for this book will be February 22, from 730-930pm. We so look forward to you joining us in this new offering and opportunity to dive deeper within ourselves, within our growing and supportive Root Mamma community!!
